Knowing Your Jewelry

Whether you are buying a diamond to give to your special someone as a symbol of your love and devotion, or simply buying one for yourself because you work hard and you deserve it, the best diamond needs a perfect setting.

Back in the 1870's, when loose diamonds were first becoming available to the public, setting styles were limited and often did not display the diamond in the most appropriate manner in terms of brilliance and beauty. Diamonds were left to look dull and dark due to a lack of light entry. Fortunately today, there is a wide variety styles available to suit every personality, every personal preference, and most importantly, every shape of diamond that you are looking to accent.

Finding the right engagement ring is mostly a matter of personal style. A simple ring with a single stone is called a solitaire and can make for a beautiful engagement ring. If you prefer more decoration, there are a wide variety of rings with side stones or baguettes that will add to the total price of the ring but also make it more unique.

Generally speaking, choosing a ring involves making four choices:

    * the material for the ring,
    * the type of setting for the diamond(s),
    * the style of ring,
    * the size

The next pages of the Advanced Ring Guide will go into each choice in detail.
