What are star rubies?
Star rubies are a rare variety of gemstone Ruby. These magnificent Jewels exhibit a strong star composed of six that seems to shimmer and glide magically across the surface when the gem is moved. This is caused due to an optical phenomenon known as "Asterism". The star is more visible when the ruby star is seen on a single source of light such as sunlight and the center of attention.

What causes the effect of Star?
Star-effect or "asterism" is caused by dense inclusions of rutile fibers (also known as "silk"). The stars are caused by light reflecting off of needle-like inclusions of rutile aligned perpendicular to the rays of the star. However, as rutile is always present in star rubies, are never completely transparent. In fact, star ruby is one of the few gemstones that really require additions (i.e. rutile).

Star rubies are rare?
Today, of every 100 gross corundum (ruby and sapphire) extracted; only three will have stars apparent after the cut into cabochons. Out of these three, one will have a poor color, but a lucky star; one will have a weak star, but a good color and only a hundred will have a lucky star and a good color!
The most original sources of stars as Mogok rubies (Burma) exhausted supplies. World production today is producing a very small amount of stars very well (especially in sizes over 5 carats). Star rubies are becoming rare as most rough today is cut into faceted stones after heating instead of being cut into cabochons to display the star.

Star Ruby myths and legends:
Traditionally, star rubies were used by Knights on the battlefield to protect themselves from enemy. Rubies of famous stars:
The Delong Star Ruby resides at the Museum of Natural history in New York. It weighs 100.32 carats. Discovered in Burma during the early 20th century, was sold by Martin Ehrmann to Edith Haggin DeLong, who donated to the Museum. In 1964 the Delong Star Ruby was the target of an infamous robbery, directed by Jack Murphy, known as Murph the Surf and two other men. He was rescued and recovered. The Delong star was found in a designated drop off-site-a phone booth in Florida.
The Rosser Reeves Ruby is one of the jewels of the biggest and best stars in the world. Weighing 138.7 carats, is not only lighter and more translucent than the Delong star, but also features a six-rayed star. This stone of Sri Lanka is known for its great color and pattern of stars as well defined. Advertising mogul Rosser Reeves, who donated the piece to the Smithsonian in 1965, carried around like a lucky stone, referring to him as her baby. Many times, said he had acquired the stone in an auction, in Istanbul in mid-1950. He actually bought the Robert c. Nelson Jr. of New York who was acting on behalf of Firestone & Parson of Boston. Firestone & Parson were selling the stone for Mr. Paul Fisher of New York. Mr. Robert Fisher, Paul's father, had bought the ruby at an auction in London in 1953. At the moment the ruby then weighed little more than 140 carats, but was heavily scratched, and a few carats were removed the cutout. The cut also helped the Center star of stone. Articles from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun in 1953 mentioned this fabulous gemstone.

Ruby is the birthstone for July and the sign of Capricorn. The superior quality of the ruby is Ruby Star. Ruby is also used to celebrate a couple's 15th and 40th anniversary.

What to look for when buying a Ruby Star:
The value of star rubies is influenced primarily by two things: the strength and sharpness of the star, (b) the strength and attractiveness of the body color.

Sharpness of the Star: the star must be sharp and silvery/white Milky. The best way to test the sharpness of the star is the Star Ruby look in sunlight with the dome facing the Sun all six pins should be straight and also prominent. The complete star must be centered in the middle of the gem, but also must be able to slide effortlessly around the cabochons.

Gemstone color: generally the rubies are red. But usually not Ruby Red Star. Most rubies stars are available in red color-pink, purplish-red or purplish-brown. Red rubies with a perfect star are very rare and can cost a fortune.

Cut: the cut is very important to expose the star effect in ruby. They need to be cut in medium to high, domed cabochon to achieve the effect of perfect star. The should be round or oval Cabochon. The stone should not be too heavy on the bottom or very flat on the top. Many stars are funds kept rude so that light is trapped inside of the yolk.

Worrying about your star ruby:
Although there are very few chemicals that attack star rubies, it is better to clean your star ruby with warm soapy water and a toothbrush. It is not recommended for cleaning your Star Ruby in Ultrasonic cleaners.

Synthetic & treatments:
Real star rubies are usually not heat treated because heating can dissolve the rutile (silk), which causes the star to form in the first place.
Beware of synthetic (laboratory-made) stars rubies! Synthetic rubies star jump as way too perfect looking, that is, a perfect star, a great color and super clean stone. Ruby natural color distribution stars is often uneven, stripes and spots-what is the best way to judge the naked eye if the star ruby is natural or man-made. However, sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between natural and synthetic gems and if you run into any such stone, be sure to ask for a gem laboratory certificate the reputation of the seller. No doubt star synthetic rubies are much cheaper than natural ones, but they can offer little or no resale value.

Advise on Star Ruby jewelry:
Star rubies are available in all forms of jewellery. However, Star Ruby rings and pendants are usually preferred. To maximize your astrological and healing effects, it is recommended that the gemstone jewelry must be fitted in such a way that the bottom of the stone touches the skin. Star Ruby can also be kept as a loose stone. Rubies look best in yellow gold jewelry, although it really depends on the choice of the wearer.
